The Benefits of Performing Live

10/9/2019

Earlier this month our Bucket Drum students performed out in the community at a fall festival. It was not only a fantastic time, it was also a great learning opportunity!

Check out their video here and then read some of the benefits of the performing arts below!
  1. Performing live gives students a sense of readiness and preparedness. When preparing for a performance, students practice often. This teaches them to be prepared for things they can plan for. But as you saw from the video, being prepared may also mean being prepared for things to go wrong. The students didn't even flinch when something went wrong though - they were ready for anything.
  2. Performing live aids in concentration skills. One thing we teach the students in class is to watch their teacher no matter what. We say "if we mess up, we mess up all together." And this time we performed, we did! As you saw, the music cut out halfway through the performance; but all of the drummers were watching their teacher and they seamlessly kept their song going through the silence, the music coming back on and all the way through the end.
  3. Performing live builds confidence. Every time students perform in front of a live audience they gain a little bit more confidence. Hearing the audience clap for them no matter what happened, knowing that they just completed a task that may have seemed daunting at first, all of the little things are like building blocks for their self-esteem. Performing teaches kids that they can do hard or scary things and it only makes them better!
  4. Performing live creates a sense of teamwork and cooperation. In bucket drums, theatre, or any live performance, students learn to work together to create something cohesive and wonderful. In bucket drums, they learn to listen to one another and play at the same time. Working with others well is a skill that will carry them all the way through school, the workforce and their whole lives.
So whether you are in piano lessons, drum lessons, theatre or acting classes, group music, or any other kind of music or performing arts class, you can get these amazing benefits that are so vital to childhood development. Our students love to experience music and theatre and we love to watch them grow from it!
